stars made of me

here is the little guy, all bundled up, not even an hour old. i was amazed at how calm he was (after crying for a few minutes) just hangin out, being brand new.
photo 1.JPG

i don't remember what day this was, maybe monday before the birth. yeah, it was. i was exhausted.

photo 2.JPG

so i went for a walk. and lo and behold, an m-f-in rainbow.

photo 3.JPG

only in the annex

photo 4.JPG

only in the matrix. i crossed the street to see these guys. yes, i am that person.

photo 5.JPG

lunch on wednesday. i need to work on that. i find i'm eating less and less during the day, just don't have the same hunger i used to. except for chocolate, always chocolate.

photo 2.JPG

after work i had yoga then it was time for movie night. to which i wore my yoga clothes. ha ha, world, i give up on you. i wanted to see moonrise kingdom, someone else wanted to see prometheus (for the second time). i'm pretty easy about how that kind of thing but have decided that alien gore movies are not my thing - i was expecting something a little less...alien gore-like. don't get me wrong, there is no doubt that it's a good movie and i like some sci-fi but i think i was hoping for something a bit more like sunshine, which is sci-fi but in a creepy philosophical way. i don't need the monsters. what i need is bill murray. look, i matched the furniture in famoso. this is why i wear beige all the time. blending in. it's underrated. i look tired. what i need is a good night's sleep. i haven't had one in a week.

yesterday i got home and drank half a bottle of wine. hung out with stella while i contemplated my next move.

okay fine.
photo 5.JPG

ended up at the grocery store, prepping for camping. i'm on breakfast so i made granola and vegan banana-pecan muffins. i bought a medley of delicious yogurts as well as eggs, bread, sausages (you lucky dicks i don't even eat those) fruits, berries etc.
this granola is an almond/pecan/pumpkin seed/hazelnut/agave/applesauce/honey/cinnamon/dried blueberry/cranberry concoction. it's good. real good. i tested it.

photo.JPG

no pictures of the muffins. imagine...muffins. that's about it.

sunday dinner

i feel the sunday dinner tradition. my family does it too. it's a good thing. you should do it. keeps you in line and connected in the right way.

this one's for you, natalie. in case you didn't already want to marry afie jurvanen, here is a video of him cooking, playing with babies, driving a truck, building cool stuff, and getting teary-eyed as his mom tells him how much she loves him. essentially, no deal-breakers in sight.

history lesson

so, i'm like an 7th generation canadian (or something, i've never really done the math) on my mom's side.

here are some amazing photos i found on the internet (i love you internet) of the family legacy up north.

this is the road leading to "fairyport", now called timber bay and is the property on which my cottage was built. it was run as a resort, with a dining hall, a hotel, and an inn.

road into fairyport 1920s

here's the sign in 1918:

fairyport 1918

you could see it from the lake. note the people for scale.

here is my great aunt (aunt joy-my grandfather's sister) on the left with her grandmother (my great-great-grandmother) emma ecclestone (big gran) on the right. try to keep up. i know it's complicated!

joy mackay emma ecclestone

a note on the people in these photos - my family tree goes thusly:
me>my mom>her father (john), his sister (joy)>their mother (elaine)>her mother (emma). ok that's my family tree, done.
and here they are again-to remind you, grandfather's sister on the table, with my great-great-grandmother.

joy and emma

emma ran the show. she threw dinner every night, never mind dances, tennis tournaments etc. she was the life of the party. and still found the time to dress like a lady.

here she is (on the left) that dog's name was wally. CUTE!

emma ecclestone and annie day dog wally

she is second from left in this one, her daughter elaine (my great grandmother (little gran)) is in the middle. 1912.

emma ecclestone (2nd from left) elaine mackay (3rd from right) 1912

this is my grandfather and his sister (my great aunt joy).

jon mackay and aunt joy

here they are again with little gran (my great grandmother). little gran died when i was about 10. i remember her very well.

john, elaine and joy mackay 1940

here is the first car to ever drive on the property. it's a 1928 dodge and was owned by a guy named mr. moneypenny. no joke.

here is my great grandfather, harry mackay in the year 1937. he's in a 1930 desoto. and in a field for some reason. beep beep!

harry mackay 1937 in a 1930 desoto

and here, driving a horse haha. that's sunset point in the background. also, the dock. 1925. love this photo.

this is the farmhouse in 1936. it still stands. the structure is a bit different but the chimney's the same.

farmhouse 1936

here again, sometime between 1922 and 1940

farmhouse 1922-1940

and now:

photo 4.JPG

looking at it from the lake side. there have been a few changes on this side over the years but it's very much the same. no idea who those people are, they could be guests.

farmhouse 1030s

this is the inn in the 40s. i believe this building burned down but i'm not entirely sure. there are remnants of buildings all through the woods up there. iron beds, granite fire places, outdoor clay ovens, foundation beams. it's easier to find stuff in the winter because you can snowshoe through.

the hotel in 1929

here it is again, with the inn on the right.

it's really difficult to imagine all of these places being on the same land that i know so well. go ahead and ask me if there are ghosts up there! (there are)

introducing:

the new love of my life, Dorian Mischa Abraham. he is tiny, has black hair, looks like his big brother and is a speed demon. the second midwife didn't even make it. the birthing tub was abandoned with two inches of water in it. he took under two hours to make his debut, from start to finish. here he is getting weighed; i've sent the rest of the photos to mom and dad, i'll let them share first.

LOOK AT HIS LITTLE LEGGIES!!!

lauren was amazing, such a strong and brave woman. she did such a great job, and completely blew my mind. he is so, so lucky to have the parents he does, and i am so thankful that i got to be part of the welcoming party.

welcome to the world. i can't wait to spoil you with love.

amazing weekend

sometimes you have a weekend where you do exactly what you want to do at all times.
that weekend happened to me this weekend. everything just fell into place. i had so much fun that i didn't really take any photos.

it started off early on friday. got home, was thirsty. found renata at the cloak and dagger, remedied thirst with a pitcher. then we headed to hot beans in search of food. took said food to kensington park and watched the neighbourhood characters do their (very strange) thing. eventually ended up at cold tea where renata recognized someone from highschool but didn't want to say their name out loud so it had to be whispered.

photo 2.JPG

it was frantic whispering because other attendee of said high school did not remember the girl. at this point i went to the washroom and came back, took a sip of my gin and tonic and then suddenly there was a beetle in my mouth. i pulled it out and flung it. at first we thought it was a roach but after careful inspection, nope, just a beetle. i think i kept myself under pretty good control considering there were just MOVING BUG LEGS on my tongue. i was worried some beetle insides were in my mouth so i had to spit in a sewer. i hate spitting in public. mostly i felt bad that i had possibly hurt the beetle. i'm sure it sucked more for him (get it?).

i was wearing short shorts and heels. not sure how i feel about this combo. i felt very conspicuous. STOP LOOKING AT ME. YOU CAN ONLY LOOK AT MY SHADOW. went home at a decent hour, i was tired.

photo 1.JPG

woke up on saturday and hit the dog beach with lauren. layla rolled around, many dogs were petted.

photo 3.JPG

gorgeous great dane was running around.

photo 4.JPG

this one dog would not leave it alone. i love how casually it's standing there. just like "uhhhh so um this isn't exactly what i had in mind." also that woman's expression.

photo 5.JPG

after the beach we met up again at the park and lazed around in the heavenly sun with some heavenly snacks and heavenly beer. was very good. julia joined up with us and then we sat around. went home and was so zonked from the sun. went to alex's for some bbq and there were lots of old friends. it was super fun but i stayed too late. whoops. yesterday was a bit rough, just from the lack of sleep but was also really fun.

i wore this dress and spilled coffee right on the crotch as soon as julia and i got on the subway. SILK WAS A BAD CHOICE! i love that joke.

photo 2.JPG

i carried a shopping bag in front of my crotch the entire time we were shopping. we had so much fun because we have similarly delicate thresholds for noise and visual stimulation so we stuck together and it made it more bearable. at one point we turned towards each other from opposite sides of aldo at the same time wearing the exact same glasses. we imagined that this happening and our delighted reaction would be part of the shopping montage in the opening to our show.

why is this their sunglasses hanging system? so that it weighs down the glasses so you can't really see how they would sit? stupid.

photo 1.JPG

after this i got home and reeeelaxed around the house. did some house stuff, did some cat stuff. watched an episode of girls, you know, the usual. i only have one episode left. i'm going to save it for a shitty day. could be today!

i know myself but that is all

fun fact: dogs are better than people.

no tongue

photo 5.JPG

all they want is to love you. and they're loyal. and gentle. what more could you want?

the oldest

i apologise in advance for both the size and quantity (and iphone quality, again, my camera is sitting on my desk being neglected) of photos in this post. i can't do them small, this stuff is so big it deserves the biggest size (that will not screw with my formatting). ok i lied i had to change my formatting slightly because the photos were getting cut off so now probably every other post looks screwy OH WELL, SHUT UP.

we went up the hill the long way, going in through the entrance at the what is essentially the lower right corner of this map:

so many stones

there were things "of importance" everywhere but also a lot of miscellaneous rocks. so, you can step on some rocks, but not others, like "wait, this one was maybe used for something so it's sacred, but these other ones, meh. they were just witnesses."

photo 5.JPG

no idea if this rock has age, use or piety value but i liked the way it looked.

photo 1.JPG

the scaffolding is a nice touch.

photo 3.JPG

photo 4.JPG

photo 5.JPG

this thing is HUGE. they've restored the floor and it gets used once in a while. note lighting and seat pillows.

i was standing in a bit of a precarious position to take this. behind me:

ok time to join the HORDES of people that just got off their tour bus. so much for getting there before the crowds.

there's a bit of a bottleneck on the stairs but luckily it opens up.

those are actually replicas of the original goddess statues. due to the wind and pollution they are now housed in the museum (which, you will recall, we did not go to).

photo 5.JPG

photo 1.JPG

it was very, very windy. there is only one photo of me without my hair in my face. i should make a composite one of all the ones with my hair in my face. i was glad i wore shorts under my dress because the whole city would've seen my underwear otherwise.

photo 1.JPG

these stones were really slippery from so much use. note my relatively clean feet.

aaand my feet after:

photo 4.JPG

my hair was SO full of dust and thus so permanently tangled that we went back to the hotel so i could attempt to brush it out because i looked like a crazy person and it felt really gross. there was one girl at the top who was sitting on a rock, brushing her hair while it was whipping around her head. so funny.

after that we headed back out to see the panathinaiko stadium (also called kallimarmaro), which is the site of the first modern olympics (1896). cool! we didn't pay the 6 extra euros to get in but did do a pretty good job of being looky-loos if you ask me.

we walked back through the national gardens, which were lovely.

i have no idea what this guy is doing.

parliament. those smaller trees are orange trees. they are everywhere. i asked someone if people pick the oranges, if they're edible, and he said they're bitter but people make jams out of them. and also use them at protests to throw at the police. so i said "i guess that's why there are so many at the parliament buildings" and he laughed his head off.

photo 2.JPG

they were digging a tunnel for the subway and stumbled across this old bath house.

photo 3.JPG

grain cisterns? i think that's what it said.

photo 4.JPG

Hadrian's Arch.

"this Hadrian guy really got around"

photo 5.JPG

the acropolis hill in the background through the arch. they must have planned that. one more of the temple of olympian zeus, from ground level.

photo 3.JPG

we didn't get to go in because SOMEONE (not me, i'm perfect) forgot that the woman at the desk had told her the site closes at 3pm on saturdays. i had a moment of "but i will probably never EVER get the chance to EVER SEE IT AGAIN NOOOOOOOO" but i got over it. the view from the fence was pretty good anyway.

ok, and that's it. now back to regular programming of cats and drinks.
