OLD THINGS

this post is about things that are old.

old thing #1: 200 year old loom.

this loom was given to my grandmother by her first husband's mother. it then made its way from Cape North (northern Cape Breton) to Wolfville, NS to Huntsville ON, where it then lived in the rafters of some shed for who knows how long.

this is in large part only the frame:

feels very strange to touch something so old, that was so well-used by people you don't know and will never meet.

photo 2.JPG

it's hard to imagine someone cutting down trees to make this. you'd have to be pretty smart to figure it out for the first time.

photo 3.JPG

who are you, MH? some of the smaller pieces

many others were later found in a pine box, such as the pedals etc.

this book was used to try and figure out which part was which.

it seemed like there were way more pieces than are shown in this picture. who knows. what i learned is that IT'S COMPLICATED. anyway the whole thing is being shipped out to Cape Breton to live in a museum near where it was made.

in an effort to get a better idea of how it would all fit together, we went to the local pioneer village to see if they had one on display. they did, but it was about 150 years newer and was very different.

this leads me to old thing(s) #2: pioneer village.

ok, this, i kid you not, is my great-grandmother Elaine (also known as Little Gran)'s tennis outfit:

her actual one. it was given to the museum because, well, look at it. imagine running around chasing a ball in the august heat in that thing. different days. pretty soon we'll be doing sports naked.

and this thing is a hair curling device. jesus. why not just make one, and use it several times, or set your damp hair before bed?

photo 2.JPG

you would not find me sitting under that thing. my grandma said she had a perm with one once. yikes.

so much good stuff everywhere.

i ended up with two heavy, gorgeous glass liquor bottles. the kind that you keep in your office and pour yourself a finger of scotch from. i forgot to take a picture of them though. i get a serious adrenaline rush when i find something i have to have and everything else goes out the window.
