karen and i had been cooking up a plan to go visit Christina for quite a while. she's about to have a wee one and we thought it would be good to visit before the baby arrives. so, we went.

karen loves takeoff and landing. i never really thought of it as fun before, but my mind has been changed. i always dreaded it because that's when you're most likely to die in a fiery crash. always looking on the bright side, that one.

bye toronto! you are beautiful.

we arrived, got settled in, and went out to grab some wine and some snacks. of course. after staying up chatting we finally went to bed.
the next day we got up and out because i had snapped up a last-minute appointment with minka sicklinger, who fit me in before the shop opened. a generous move and i really appreciated it.

all of her stuff is so great but i wanted something compass-like because i am literally just finding my way.

when i look at it, it leads me north, because when in doubt, that's where you should go. at least if you're a woman of the wall, which i am. it's nice to look at this photo cause right now it's scabbed and peeling like a mofo and does not look nearly this delicate.
after that we took our appetites to smorgasburg, a food cart heaven in williamsburg. i think this might be the best place i have ever been to.

so many choices. so. many. how do you pick? give me one of everything! hold the meat!

CHEDBREAD. cornbread, with cheese in it. in all different flavours. gimme that first.

what a perfect backdrop for a food fair.

(and tourist photos)

i picked the least sketchy person i could find to take the photo below. he was sitting beside us, eating a baguette.

getting home, it was time to kick up our feet. and oh look, it's WINE TIME!

after wine-ing we ventured out for dinner. we ended up at river styx, and it was amazing.

love the cocktail names. 'bad loser' especially. i know a few of those.

the light was dim and so candles made for mood lighting.

we are candle-lit.

after dinner we went to transmitter park to see the skyline and get up to some hijinks.

popped into a couple of bars but we were being picky about atmosphere and finally ended up at iron and oak, where they had a jukebox full of gold. we got carded. STILL GOT IT! karen and i got christina a shot of cranberry juice, and of course whiskey for ourselves. a sign of things to come.

my recollection of taking this photo is blurry at best.

the wine store! we stopped into the wine store we'd been frequenting all weekend (dandelion wine)

since at this point we were regulars, we were treated to a custom playlist of neil young (seeing a we're canadian) and some complementary bourbon. "do you like bourbon?" "YES."

in wine glasses, obviously. (see those bags? i bought one).

and then, he gave us the bottle. the experience at that place is the best argument for privatized liquor stores i can possibly imagine. why shouldn't buying wine/spirits be personal and enjoyable? he said they'd open a bottle of champagne when henry is born. that would never happen at the LCBO. i hate this shithole town (just kidding i love you toronto!) but seriously we have some improving to do.
me and my prize

feeling a little rough from the night's adventures, we headed out to soothe our heads and stomachs at brunch. i don't even know where we are. it had "brooklyn" in it's name. i think. who knows. it was super delicious.

then karen and i ventured out on the longest, hottest walking tour of brooklyn. we went to a ton of cute places and got snacks.
everything just looks so good there.

when we got back we lay down perfectly still on the air mattress, recovering from our four hour walk, while christina and nick finished their childbirth class. then, it was time to go. aka, sad time. the weekend went so quickly.

it's so amazing to think that the next time i'll see cheechina that she'll have a small human whose life she is responsible for. i can't wait to meet him. i'm sure he'll be just as wonderful as his parents (thanks again for being wonderful, guys!)

goodbye new york, you were just what i needed. let's not be strangers.
